Born in Houston, Texas, February 9, 1970, Marcel Taylor was exposed to art
at a very young age. The relaxed pace of Houston, Texas provided the
perfect environment for nurturing his talent. He took private art lessons
and received training in the arts in public schools to support his artistic
development. In 1988, Marcel was accepted as a scholarship recipient of the fine
arts program at Howard University, in Washington, D.C. Under the guidance
of Alfred Smith, Winston Kennedy, and others, Marcel developed his painting
style, which offers a signature of high contrast, vibrant hues, and bold
imagery. His studies in African art, Western art, and global architecture
continue to influence his art today.
Since receiving a B.A. degree in Fine Arts from Howard in 1992, Marcel has
embarked upon a fulfilling career as an artist. Marcel has volunteered as
an art instructor with several youth organizations and, in 1996, co-founded the
SAGE Collective, a diverse group of visual and performing artists. As
cofounder of the SAGE Collective, Marcel helped organize and sponsor art
exhibitions and expose youth to art. In 1997, Taylor was awarded residency
at the Art-Omi International Artists Colony in upstate New York. There he
was inspired by an encouraging sphere of international artists and the
guidance of Sam Gilliam, who participated as a mentor. Because of his
appreciation for architecture and urban spaces, Marcel enjoys traveling to
urban centers like New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, and
Philadelphia. Furthermore, he has gone abroad to several countries such as
Canada, Mexico, and Italy where he studied local art and architecture.
Currently Marcel resides in Maryland where he continues to
create. Marcel describes his current body of paintings, CITYSCAPES, as
“attempts to interpret the many moods of urban space by capturing the
essence of light, shadow, sound, symmetry, and rhythm with vibrantly painted
brush strokes.”
